Explain what happens when boric acid is heated.
Solution:
On heating orthoboric acid above 370 K, it forms metaboric acid, HBO2\mathrm{HBO}_2 which on further heating yields boric oxide, B2O3\mathrm{B}_2\mathrm{O}_3.
H3BO3ΔHBO2ΔB2O3\mathrm{H}_3\mathrm{BO}_3\xrightarrow[]{\Delta}\mathrm{HBO}_2\xrightarrow[]{\Delta}\mathrm{B}_2\mathrm{O}_3
