Question : 32 of 38
Marks: +1, -0
Give one method for industrial preparation and one for laboratory preparation of CO and CO2\mathrm{CO}_2 each.
Solution:
Preparation of CO :
Lab method : Pure CO is prepared by dehydration of formic acid or oxalic acid with concentrated H2SO4\mathrm{H}_2\mathrm{SO}_4 at 373 K.
HCOOH conc. H2SO4373K\xrightarrow[\text{conc. H}_2\mathrm{SO}_4]{373\,\mathrm{K}} CO + H2O\mathrm{H}_2\mathrm{O}
Industrial method : CO is prepared by the passage of steam over hot coke. The mixture of CO and H2\mathrm{H}_2 thus, produced is known as water gas or synthesis gas.
C(s)+H2O(g)\mathrm{C(s)}+\mathrm{H_2O(g)} 4731273K\xrightarrow{473-1273\,\mathrm{K}} CO(g)+H2(g)Water gas\underset{\text{Water gas}}{\mathrm{CO(g)}+\mathrm{H_2(g)}}
When air is used instead of steam, a mixture of CO and N2\mathrm{N}_2 is produced, which is called producer gas.
2C(s)+O2(g)+N2(g)2\mathrm{C(s)}+\mathrm{O_2(g)}+\mathrm{N_2(g)} 1273K\xrightarrow{1273\,\mathrm{K}} 2CO(g)+N2(g)Producer gas\underset{\text{Producer gas}}{2\mathrm{CO(g)}+\mathrm{N_2(g)}}
Preparation of CO2\mathrm{CO}_2 :
Lab method : In the laboratory it is conveniently prepared by the action of dilute HCl on calcium carbonate.
CaCO3(s)+2HCl(aq)\mathrm{CaCO_3(s)}+2\mathrm{HCl(aq)}CaCl2(aq)+CO2(g)+H2O(l)\mathrm{CaCl_2(aq)}+\mathrm{CO_2(g)}+\mathrm{H_2O(l)}
Industrial method : When lime is manufactured by the calcination of limestone (CaCO3)(\mathrm{CaCO_3}), carbon dioxide is obtained as a by product.
CaCO3\mathrm{CaCO_3}CaO+CO2\mathrm{CaO}+\mathrm{CO_2}
