Question : 4 of 30
Marks: +1, -0
Fluorine reacts with ice and results in the change :
H2O(s)+F2(g)\mathrm{H_2O}_{(s)} + \mathrm{F}_{2(g)}HF(g)+HOF(g)\mathrm{HF}_{(g)} + \mathrm{HOF}_{(g)}
Justify that this reaction is a redox reaction.
Solution:
H2+1O(s)2+F2(g)0\overset{+1}{\mathrm{H}_2}\mathrm{O}_{(s)}^{\,-2} + \mathrm{F}_{\overset{0}{2(g)}}H+1F(g)1+H+1O2F(g)+1\overset{+1}{\mathrm{H}}\mathrm{F}_{(g)}^{\,-1} + \overset{+1}{\mathrm{H}}\overset{-2}{\mathrm{O}}\mathrm{F}_{(g)}^{\,+1}
Since fluorine can undergo oxidation as well as reduction hence, it is an example of redox reaction.
