Question : 24 of 30
Marks: +1, -0
Refer to the periodic table given in your book and now answer the following questions:
(a) Select the possible non metals that can show disproportionation reaction.
(b) Select three metals that can show disproportionation reaction.
Solution:
(a) The non-metals which show disproportionation reaction are N, P, S, Cl, Br and I.
(i) 2NO2(aq)+2OH(aq)−2\mathrm{NO}_{2(\mathrm{aq})} + 2\mathrm{OH}^{-}_{(\mathrm{aq})} → NO2−(aq)+NO3−(aq)+H2O(l){\mathrm{NO}_2^-}_{(\mathrm{aq})} + {\mathrm{NO}_3^-}_{(\mathrm{aq})} + {\mathrm{H_2O}}_{(\mathrm{l})}
(ii) P4(s)+3OH(aq)−+3H2O(l)\mathrm{P}_{4(\mathrm{s})} + 3\mathrm{OH}^{-}_{(\mathrm{aq})} + 3\mathrm{H_2O}_{(\mathrm{l})} → PH3(g)+3H2PO2(aq)−\mathrm{PH}_{3(\mathrm{g})} + 3\mathrm{H_2PO_2}^{-}_{(\mathrm{aq})}
(iii) S8(s)+12OH(aq)−\mathrm{S}_{8(\mathrm{s})} + 12\mathrm{OH}^{-}_{(\mathrm{aq})} → 4S2−(aq)+2S2O3(aq)2−+6H2O(l)4\mathrm{S}^{2-}(\mathrm{aq}) + 2\mathrm{S_2O_3}^{2-}_{(\mathrm{aq})} + 6\mathrm{H_2O}_{(\mathrm{l})}
(iv) Cl2(g)+2OH(aq)−\mathrm{Cl}_{2(\mathrm{g})} + 2\mathrm{OH}^{-}_{(\mathrm{aq})} → Cl(aq)−+ClO(aq)−+H2O(l)\mathrm{Cl}^{-}_{(\mathrm{aq})} + \mathrm{ClO}^{-}_{(\mathrm{aq})} + \mathrm{H_2O}_{(\mathrm{l})}
Bromine and iodine give similar reactions as chlorine.
(b) The metals which undergo disproportionation reaction are :
Cu+,Ga+,In+\mathrm{Cu}^{+}, \mathrm{Ga}^{+}, \mathrm{In}^{+}, etc.
(i) 2Cu(aq)+2\mathrm{Cu}^{+}_{(\mathrm{aq})} → Cu(aq)2++Cu(s)\mathrm{Cu}^{2+}_{(\mathrm{aq})} + \mathrm{Cu}_{(\mathrm{s})}
(ii) 3Ga(aq)+3\mathrm{Ga}^{+}_{(\mathrm{aq})} → Ga(aq)3++2Ga(s)\mathrm{Ga}^{3+}_{(\mathrm{aq})} + 2\mathrm{Ga}_{(\mathrm{s})}
(iii) 3In(aq)+3\mathrm{In}^{+}_{(\mathrm{aq})} → In(aq)3++2In(s)\mathrm{In}^{3+}_{(\mathrm{aq})} + 2\mathrm{In}_{(\mathrm{s})}
