Why is nitric acid added to sodium extract before adding silver nitrate for testing halogens?
Solution:
Halogens are detected by due to the formation of AgX ppt. But, if the Lassaigne’s extract contains or ions due to the compound, then they may interfere in the test for halogens. and form AgCN and with and may produce erroneous results.
