Question : 26 of 73
Marks: +1, -0
Which of the following reactions will get affected by increasing the pressure? Also, mention whether change will cause the reaction to go into forward or backward direction.
(i) COCl2(g)COCl_{2(g)} ⇌ CO(g)+Cl2(g)CO_(g) + Cl_{2(g)}
(ii) CH4(g)+2S2(g)CH_{4(g)} + 2S_{2(g)} ⇌ CS2(g)+2H2S(g)CS_{2(g)} + 2H_2S_(g)
(iii) CO2(g)+C(s)CO_{2(g)} + C_(s) ⇌ 2CO(g)2CO_(g)
(iv) 2H2(g)+CO(g)2H_{2(g)} + CO_(g) ⇌ CH3OH(g)CH_3OH_(g)
(v) CaCO3(s)CaCO_{3(s)} ⇌ CaO(s)+CO2(g)CaO_(s) + CO_{2(g)}
(vi) 4NH3(g)+5O2(g)4NH_{3(g)} + 5O_{2(g)} ⇌ 4NO(g)+6H2O(g)4NO_(g) + 6H_2O_(g)
Solution:
Reactions will be affected in those in which (npn_p ≠ nrn_r)gaseous. Hence, reactions (i), (iii), (iv), (v) and (vi) will be affected. By applying Le Chatelier’s principle, we can predict the direction.
(i) npn_p = 2, nrn_r = 1 i.e., npn_p > nrn_r, reaction will go in the backward direction.
(ii) npn_p = 3, nrn_r = 3 i.e., npn_p = nrn_r, reaction will not be affected by pressure.
(iii) npn_p = 2, nrn_r = 1 i.e., npn_p > nrn_r, reaction will go in the backward direction.
(iv) npn_p = 1, nrn_r = 3 i.e., npn_p < nrn_r, reaction will go in the forward direction.
(v) npn_p = 1, nrn_r = 0 i.e., npn_p > nrn_r, reaction will go in the backward direction.
(vi) npn_p = 10, nrn_r = 9 i.e., npn_p > nrn_r, reaction will go in the backward direction.
