Question : 12 of 40
Marks: +1, -0
Consider the following species : N3,O2,F,Na+,Mg2+\mathrm{N}^{3-}, \mathrm{O}^{2-}, \mathrm{F}^{-}, \mathrm{Na}^{+}, \mathrm{Mg}^{2+} and Al3+\mathrm{Al}^{3+}
(a) What is common in them?
(b) Arrange them in the order of increasing ionic radii.
Solution:
(a) All these are isoelectronic species as they are having same number of electrons i.e., 10.
(b) As Z/e decreases, size increases so, order should be,
N3\mathrm{N}^{3-} > O2\mathrm{O}^{2-} > F\mathrm{F}^{-} > Na+\mathrm{Na}^{+} > Mg2+\mathrm{Mg}^{2+} > Al3+\mathrm{Al}^{3+}.
