Question : 18 of 67
Marks: +1, -0
A sound wave travelling in water has wavelength 0.4 m0.4\ \mathrm{m}.
Is this wave audible in air? (The speed of sound in water =1400 ms1=1400\ \mathrm{ms}^{-1} )
Solution:
Given : λ=0.4 m, v=1400 ms1\lambda=0.4\ \mathrm{m},\ v=1400\ \mathrm{ms}^{-1}
We know, v=fλv=f\lambda
or f=vλ=140004=3500 Hzf=\frac{v}{\lambda}=\frac{1400}{0\cdot 4}=3500\ \mathrm{Hz}
Yes. Since the value of ff lies in the audibility range (20 Hz(20\ \mathrm{Hz} to 20,000 Hz)20,000\ \mathrm{Hz}), so the sound wave is audible in air.
