A person is standing at the sea shore. An observer on the ship which is anchored in between a vertical cliff and the person on the shore fires a gun. The person on the shore hears two sounds, 2 seconds and 3 seconds after seeing the smoke of the fired gun. If the speed of sound in the air is 320 ms−1320\,\text{ms}^{-1} then calculate :

the distance between the cliff and the observer on the ship.
Solution:
The time taken by sound to travel from observer to cliff and then from cliff to the man on sea shore =3=3 seconds.
Let the distance between the cliff and the observer on the ship = ' xx ' metres.
∴\therefore Distance travelled by sound
  =(x+x+640)m\;=(x+x+640)\mathrm{m}
  =(2x+640)m\;=(2x+640)\mathrm{m}
   Speed     =320  m/s\;\text{ Speed }\;\;=320\;\mathrm{m} / \mathrm{s}
   time     =3   seconds   \;\text{ time }\;\;=3\;\text{ seconds }\;
∵       Distance     =   Speed   ×   time   \because\;\; \;\text{ Distance }\;\;=\;\text{ Speed }\; \times \;\text{ time }\;
∴    (2x+640)  =320×3\therefore \;\; (2x+640)\;=320 \times 3
2x+640  =9602x+640\;=960
2x  =960−6402x\;=960-640
2x  =3202x\;=320
x  =  3202=160mx\;=\;\frac{320}{2}=160 \mathrm{m}
