Question : 54 of 70
Marks: +1, -0
Why does a bottle of soft drink cool faster when surrounded by ice cubes than by ice cold water, both at 0∘ C0^{\circ}\ \mathrm{C} ?
Solution:
Because 1 gm1\ \text{gm} of ice at 0∘ C0^{\circ}\ \mathrm{C} takes 336 J336\ \mathrm{J} of heat energy from the drink to melt into water at 0∘ C0^{\circ}\ \mathrm{C}. Thus drink loses an additional 336J of heat energy for 1 g1\ \mathrm{g} ice at 0∘ C0^{\circ}\ \mathrm{C} than for 1 gm1\ \text{gm} ice-cold water at 0∘C0^{\circ}\mathrm{C}. Therefore cooling produced by 1 g1\ \mathrm{g} ice at 0∘ C0^{\circ}\ \mathrm{C} is more than that by 1 gm1\ \text{gm} water at 0∘ C0^{\circ}\ \mathrm{C}.
