Solve the following numerical problem: [3] Ethane burns in oxygen according to the chemical equation :
2 C 2 H 6 + 7 O 2 → 4 CO 2 + 6 H 2 O
If80 ml of ethane is burnt in 300 ml of oxygen, find the composition of the resultant gaseous mixture when measured at room temperature.
If
Solution:
Given: 2 C 2 H 6 + 7 O 2 → 4 CO 2 + 6 H 2 O
∵ 2 moles of ethane reacts with 7 moles of oxygen to produce -6 moles of H 2 O + 4 moles of carbondioxide.
2 ml . of ethane reacts with 7 ml . of oxygen = 4 ml . of carbon dioxide + ml of H 2 O .
∴ 80 ml . of ethane reacts with 280 ml . of oxygen = 160 ml . of CO 2 + 240 ml . of H 2 O
In this reaction ethane in the limiting reagent and20 ml . of oxygen will be left, unreacted.
The composition of the resultant gaseous mixture when measured at room temperature will be:
20 ml . of oxygen gas : 160 ml . of CO 2 and 240 ml . of H 2 O .
In this reaction ethane in the limiting reagent and
The composition of the resultant gaseous mixture when measured at room temperature will be:
