Question : 80 of 88
Marks: +1, -0
Cu2+,Na+,Zn2+,Ag+\mathrm{Cu}^{2+}, \mathrm{Na}^{+}, \mathrm{Zn}^{2+}, \mathrm{Ag}^{+}(The order of Preferential discharge at the cathode)
Solution:
Na+<Zn2+<Cu2+<Ag+\mathrm{Na}^{+} < \mathrm{Zn}^{2+} < \mathrm{Cu}^{2+} < \mathrm{Ag}^{+}
During electrolysis of aqueous solution, if a cation has higher electrode potential then water, it preferentially discharge at the cathode. The elements in the lower position in electro-chemical series gets discharged more easily, so Na+\mathrm{Na}^{+} discharged least preferentially and Ag+\mathrm{Ag}^{+} more preferentially.
