Question : 64 of 85
Marks: +1, -0
The equation 4NH3+5O24NO+4 \mathrm{NH}_3+5 \mathrm{O}_2 \rightarrow 4 \mathrm{NO}+ 6H2O6 \mathrm{H_2O} , represents the catalytic oxidation of ammonia. If 100cm3100 \mathrm{cm}^3 of ammonia is used calculate the volume of oxygen required to oxidise the ammonia completely.
Solution:
4NH3+5O24NO+6H2O4 \mathrm{NH}_3+5 \mathrm{O}_2 \rightarrow 4 \mathrm{NO}+6 \mathrm{H_2O}
4Vol.:5Vol.4 \text{Vol.} : 5 \text{Vol.}
If 4 volumes of NH3\mathrm{NH}_3 requires 5vol5 \mathrm{vol} . of O2\mathrm{O}_2
Then 100cm3100 \mathrm{cm}^3 of NH3\mathrm{NH}_3 requires =54×100= \frac{5}{4} \times 100
=125cm3   oxygen.   =125 \mathrm{cm}^3 \; \text{ oxygen. }\;
