Question : 32 of 88
Marks: +1, -0
Oxygen oxidises ethyne to carbon dioxide and water as shown by the equation :
2C2H2+5O24CO2+2H2O2 \mathrm{C}_2\mathrm{H}_2+5 \mathrm{O}_2 \rightarrow 4 \mathrm{CO}_2+2 \mathrm{H}_2\mathrm{O}
What volume of ethyne gas at s.t.p. is required to produce 8.4dm38.4 \mathrm{dm}^3 of carbon dioxide at s.t.p. ? [H=1,C=12,O=[ \mathrm{H}=1, \mathrm{C}=12, \mathrm{O}= 16]
Solution:
2C2H2+5O24CO2+2H2O2vol.:5vol.:4vol.:2vol.\begin{array}{ccccccc} 2 \mathrm{C}_2\mathrm{H}_2 & + & 5 \mathrm{O}_2 & \rightarrow & 4 \mathrm{CO}_2 & + & 2 \mathrm{H}_2\mathrm{O} \\ 2 \text{vol.} & : & 5 \text{vol.} & : & 4 \text{vol.} & : & 2 \text{vol.} \end{array}
If 4vol4 \mathrm{vol} . of CO2\mathrm{CO}_2 is produced by 2 vol. of C2H2\mathrm{C}_2\mathrm{H}_2 at STP
Then 8.4dm38.4 \mathrm{dm}^3 of CO2\mathrm{CO}_2 is produced by
  24×8.4=4.2dm3    \; \frac{2}{4} \times 8.4 = 4.2 \mathrm{dm}^3 \; \text{. } \;
