(i) Identify the extrinsic semiconductors so formed.

(ii) Why is doping of intrinsic semiconductors necessary?

Solution:

(i) Arsenic is pentavalent. So,

C_1

doped with arsenic will form

n

-type semiconductor.Aluminium is trivalent. So,

C_2

doped with aluminium will form

p

-type semiconductor.

(ii) Doping is necessary to increase the conductivity of semiconductor at normal temperature.
