Question : 11
Total: 13
SECTION - C
(a) How are electromagnetic waves produced ? Depict an electromagnetic wave propagating in Z-direction with its magnetic field (b) Write two characteristics of electromagnetic waves.
Solution:
(a) An electromagnetic wave can be created by accelerating charges; moving charges back and forth.
Electromagnetic wave propagating along the Z-axis :
The magnetic field
will be along X -axis
B X = B 0 s i n [ k z − ω t ]
The electric field
will be along Y -axis
E Y = E 0 s i n [ k z − ω t ]
(b) Characteristic of electromagnetic waves:
(i) No medium is required for the electromagnetic wave to travel through.
(ii) An electromagnetic wave, although it carries no mass, does carry energy. It also has momentum, and can exert pressure (known as radiation pressure).
(iii) The energy carried by an electromagnetic wave is proportional to the frequency of the wave.
