Show diagrammatically the behaviour of magnetic field lines in the presence of (i) paramagnetic and (ii) diamagnetic substances. How does one explain this distinguishing feature?

(i) The behaviour of magnetic field lines in the presence of a para magnetic substance is shown below:
(ii) The behavior of magnetic field lines in the presence of a diamagnetic substance is shown below:
Their differing relative permeabilities account for this distinguishing feature. When a diamagnetic substance has a relative permeability that is less than 1 , the magnetic lines of force do not prefer to pass through the substance. On the other hand, when a paramagnetic substance has a relative permeability that is greater than 1, the magnetic lines of force prefer to pass through the substance.
(ii) The behavior of magnetic field lines in the presence of a diamagnetic substance is shown below:
