Question : 8 of 27
Marks: +1, -0
Write balanced chemical equations for the following processes:
(a) Cl2\mathrm{Cl}_2 is passed through slaked lime.
(b) SO2\mathrm{SO}_2 gas is passed through an aqueous solution of Fe\mathrm{Fe} (III) salt.
OR
(a) Write two poisonous gases prepared from chlorine gas.
(b) Why does Cu2+\mathrm{Cu}^{2+} solution give blue colour on reaction with ammonia?
Solution:
(b) Cu2+\mathrm{Cu}^{2+} ion reacts with ammonia solution to form a deep blue coloured complex because of the property of ammonia to form complex compounds. Ammonia acts as a lewis base due to presence of lone pair of electrons on the nitrogen atom. Hence, it is able to form coordinate bond with electron deficient molecules or a number of transition metal cations.
Cu2+(aq)+4NH3(aq)Cu(NH3)42+\mathrm{Cu}^{2+}(\mathrm{aq}) + 4 \mathrm{NH}_3 (\mathrm{aq}) \xrightarrow[\mathrm{Cu}(\mathrm{NH}_3)_4]{2+}
