Question : 34 of 36
Marks: +1, -0
An iron nail is dipped in the solution of copper sulphate for about 3 03\ 0 minutes, state the change in colour observed. Give the reason for the change.
Solution:
Iron is more reactive than Cu\mathrm{Cu}. So it displaces Cu\mathrm{Cu} from copper sulphate solution. Thus, blue colour of the CuSO4\mathrm{CuSO}_4 solution fades and colour of the solution turns green due to the formation of ferrous sulphate solution. This is a displacement reaction.
CuSO4(aq)Blue+Fe(s)→FeSO4(aq)Green+Cu(s)\underset{\text{Blue}}{\mathrm{CuSO}_4(\mathrm{aq})} + \mathrm{Fe}(\mathrm{s}) \rightarrow \underset{\text{Green}}{\mathrm{FeSO}_4(\mathrm{aq})} + \mathrm{Cu}(\mathrm{s})
