Question : 21 of 39
Marks: +1, -0
State whether the given chemical reaction is a redox reaction or not.
Justify your answer.
MnO2+4HClMnCl2+2H2O+Cl2\mathrm{MnO}_2 + 4 \mathrm{HCl} \rightarrow \mathrm{MnCl}_2 + 2 \mathrm{H}_2\mathrm{O} + \mathrm{Cl}_2
Solution:
The given reaction is an example of an oxidation-reduction reaction or redox reaction.
If a substance gains oxygen or loses hydrogen during a reaction, it is oxidised. If a substance loses oxygen or gains hydrogen during a reaction, it is reduced. In the given reaction, HCl\mathrm{HCl} loses hydrogen to form Cl2\mathrm{Cl}_2. Thus, the given reaction is a redox reaction.
