Question : 10 of 20
Marks: +1, -0
Two salts 'X' and 'Y' are dissolved in water separately. When phenolphthalein is added to these two solutions, the solution 'X' turns pink and the solution 'Y' does not show any change in colour, therefore 'X' and 'Y' are
Solution:
Salt X is Na2CO3Na_2CO_3 (sodium carbonate) and salt Y is NH4ClNH_4Cl . The reason for this is that Na2CO3Na_2CO_3 is a basic salt, and when it is dissolved in water, it dissociates to produce hydroxide ions (OH−)(OH^-).
When NH4ClNH_4Cl dissolve in water it forms acidic solution and the colour of phenolphthalein in acidic medium is colour less.
Hence X = Na2CO3Na_2CO_3 and Y = NH4ClNH_4Cl.
