Question : 3 of 7
Marks: +1, -0
Consider the carbon compounds having following molecular formula:(i) C2H2\mathrm{C}_2\mathrm{H}_2 (ii) C2H6\mathrm{C}_2\mathrm{H}_6 (iii) C3H7OH\mathrm{C}_3\mathrm{H}_7\mathrm{OH}
(iv) C2H5COOH\mathrm{C}_2\mathrm{H}_5\mathrm{COOH} (v) CH3CHO\mathrm{CH}_3\mathrm{CHO}
(a) Identify which one of the above compounds, is a member of aldehyde series.
(b) Write the general formula of the series to which compound C2H2\mathrm{C}_2\mathrm{H}_2 belongs.
(c) Which one of the above compounds has triple bonds between carbon - carbon atoms?
(d) Write the molecular formula of the first member of the homologous series to which the compound C3H7OH\mathrm{C}_3\mathrm{H}_7\mathrm{OH} belongs.
Solution:
(a) Acetaldehyde (CH3CHO)(\mathrm{CH}_3\mathrm{CHO}) is a member of aldehyde series.
(b) Ethyne (C2H2)(\mathrm{C}_2\mathrm{H}_2) is the first member of the alkyne family, with two carbon atoms connected by a triple bond. Alkynes comprise a series of carbon and hydrogenbased compounds that contain at least one triple bond. This group of compounds is a homologous series with the general molecular formula of CnH2n2\mathrm{C}_n\mathrm{H}_{2n-2'}, where nn equals to any integer greater than one.
(c) Ethyne (C2H2)(\mathrm{C}_2\mathrm{H}_2) have two carbon atoms connected by a triple bond.
(d) C3H7OH\mathrm{C}_3\mathrm{H}_7\mathrm{OH} belongs to the homologous series with general formula of
CnH(2n+1)OH\mathrm{C}_n\mathrm{H}_{(2n+1)}\mathrm{OH}
The first member of this series is
C1H(2(1)+1)OH=CH3OH  extmethanol.  \mathrm{C}_1\mathrm{H}_{(2(1)+1)}\mathrm{OH} = \mathrm{CH}_3\mathrm{OH} \; ext{ methanol. }\;
