Question : 11 of 15
Marks: +1, -0
(a) State Ohm's Law. Represent it mathematically.
(b) Define 1ohm1 \mathrm{ohm}.
(c) What is the resistance of a conductor through which a current of 0.5A0.5 \mathrm{A} flows when a potential difference of 2V2 \mathrm{V} is applied across its ends?
Solution:
(a) According to Ohm's law, the current flowing through a given conductor is directly proportional to the potential difference along its ends provided the the temperature and physical conditions remain the same.
Mathematically, VIV \propto I
Or, V=RV = \mathbb{R},
Where RR is the constant of proportionality and is called resistance. Its SI unit is ohm.
(b) 1ohm1 \mathrm{ohm} is the resistance offered by a conductor of unit cross sectional area when 1A1 \mathrm{A} current flows through it at a voltage of 1 volt.
(c) V=IR;2=0.5RV = IR ; 2 = 0.5 R; or R=20.5=4ohmR = \frac{2}{0.5} = 4 \mathrm{ohm}.
