Question : 7 of 60
Marks: +1, -0
Which of the following statements about the reaction given below are correct?
MnO2+4HClMnCl2+2H2O+Cl2\mathrm{MnO}_2+4\mathrm{HCl}\rightarrow\mathrm{MnCl}_2+2\mathrm{H}_2\mathrm{O}+\mathrm{Cl}_2
(i) HCl\mathrm{HCl} is oxidized to Cl2\mathrm{Cl}_2
(ii) MnO2\mathrm{MnO}_2 is reduced to MnCl2\mathrm{MnCl}_2
(iii) MnCl2\mathrm{MnCl}_2 acts as an oxidizing agent
(iv) HCl\mathrm{HCl} acts as on oxidizing agent
Solution:
In the given reaction,
MnO2+4HClMnCl2+2H2O+Cl2\mathrm{MnO}_2+4\mathrm{HCl}\rightarrow\mathrm{MnCl}_2+2\mathrm{H}_2\mathrm{O}+\mathrm{Cl}_2
HCl\mathrm{HCl} is getting oxidized to Cl2\mathrm{Cl}_2 and MnO2\mathrm{MnO}_2 is reduced to MnCl2\mathrm{MnCl}_2. This can be explained as follows:
Here,
2e+MnOMnCl2+2+422\mathrm{e}+\overset{+4_2}{\mathrm{MnO}\rightarrow\overset{+2}{\mathrm{MnCl}_2}}
Mn\mathrm{Mn} is going from +4 oxidation state to +2 oxidation thus clearly Mn\mathrm{Mn} is gaining electrons here MnO2\mathrm{MnO}_2 is reduced to MnCl2\mathrm{MnCl}_2
2HCl1Cl2O+2e2\overset{-1}{\mathrm{HCl}}\rightarrow\overset{O}{\mathrm{Cl}_2}+2\mathrm{e}^{-}
Hence Cl\mathrm{Cl} of HCl\mathrm{HCl} is in -1 oxidation state and after losing its one electron it goes to 0 (elementary form) oxidation state, hence here HCl\mathrm{HCl} is oxidised to Cl2\mathrm{Cl}_2.
