Question : 46 of 60
Marks: +1, -0
The refractive index of medium AA is 1.5 and that of medium BB is 1.33. If the speed of light in air is 3×108 m/s3 \times 10^{8} \text{ m}/\text{s}, what is the speed of light in medium AA and BB respectively?
Solution:
When a light ray travels from one medium to another, its direction changes, because the velocity of light changes according to the medium.
The refractive index is the degree of the change of the direction of the light in two mediums.
The refractive index n=cvn = \frac{c}{v}
From the question, it is given that the speed of the light in the air is c=3×108 m/sc = 3 \times 10^{8} \text{ m}/\text{s}
the refractive index of the medium AA is nA=1.5n_A = 1.5 that of medium BB is nB=1.33n_{B} = 1.33
the velocity of light in medium AA is v=cnAv = \frac{c}{n_{A}} =3×1081.5=2×108 m/s= \frac{3 \times 10^{8}}{1.5} = 2 \times 10^{8} \text{ m}/\text{s}
the velocity of light in medium BB is v=cnBv = \frac{c}{n_{B}} =3×1081.33=2.2×108 m/s= \frac{3 \times 10^{8}}{1.33} = 2.2 \times 10^{8} \text{ m}/\text{s}
