Question : 5 of 27
Marks: +1, -0
The absolute refractive index of Ruby is 1.71.7. Find the speed of light in Ruby. The speed of light in vacuum is 3×108 m/s3 \times 10^8 \text{ m/s}.
Solution:
We know that,
Refractive index of ruby μ\mu
=Speed of light in air (or vacuum)Speed of light in ruby= \frac{\text{Speed of light in air (or vacuum)}}{\text{Speed of light in ruby}}
So, 170=3×108Speed of light in ruby1 \cdot 70 = \frac{3 \times 10^8}{\text{Speed of light in ruby}}
 or Speed of light in ruby =3×1081.7 ms1\text{ or Speed of light in ruby } = \frac{3 \times 10^8}{1.7} \text{ ms}^{-1}
=1.76×108 ms1= 1.76 \times 10^8 \text{ ms}^{-1}
Thus, speed of light in ruby is 1.76×108 ms11.76 \times 10^8 \text{ ms}^{-1}.
