Question : 7 of 36
Marks: +1, -0
Write the structural formula of ethanol. What happens when it is heated with excess of conc. H2SO4\mathrm{H_2SO_4} at 443K443\,\mathrm{K}, ? Write the chemical equation for the reaction stating the role of conc. H2SO4\mathrm{H_2SO_4} in this reaction.
Solution:
Structural formula of ethanol is :
CH3CH2OH\mathrm{CH_3CH_2OH}
When ethanol is heated with excess of conc. H2SO4\mathrm{H_2SO_4} at 443K443\,\mathrm{K} it results in the dehydration of ethanol to give ethene.
CH3CH2OHEthanolConc. H2SO443KCH2Ethene=CH2+H2O\,\underset{\text{Ethanol}}{\mathrm{CH_3CH_2OH}}\,\,\frac{\text{Conc. }\mathrm{H_2SO_4}}{43\,\mathrm{K}}\,\,\underset{\text{Ethene}}{\mathrm{CH_2}}=\mathrm{CH_2}+\mathrm{H_2O}
Role of conc. H2SO4\mathrm{H_2SO_4} : Conc. H2SO4\mathrm{H_2SO_4} acts as a dehydrating agent which removes water from the ethanol.
