Question : 7 of 36
Marks: +1, -0
Two carbon compounds XX and YY have the molecular formula C4H8\mathrm{C}_4\mathrm{H}_8 and C5H12\mathrm{C}_5\mathrm{H}_{12} respectively. Which one of these is most likely to show addition reaction ? Justify your answer. Also give the chemical equation to explain the process of addition reaction in this case.
Solution:
X=C4H8X=\mathrm{C}_4\mathrm{H}_8 is an alkene.
Y=C5H12Y=\mathrm{C}_5\mathrm{H}_{12} is an alkane.
XX being an alkene i.e., butene is unsaturated compound and will show addition reaction as they have free electrons for bonding.
CH3CH2CH=CH2+H2Pd/NiCH3CH2CH2CH3\mathrm{CH}_3\mathrm{CH}_2\mathrm{CH}=\mathrm{CH}_2+\mathrm{H}_2\xrightarrow{\mathrm{Pd}/\mathrm{Ni}}\mathrm{CH}_3\mathrm{CH}_2\mathrm{CH}_2\mathrm{CH}_3
CH3CH=CHCH3+Cl2hvCH3ClCHClCHCH3\mathrm{CH}_3\mathrm{CH}=\mathrm{CHCH}_3+\mathrm{Cl}_2\xrightarrow{\mathrm{hv}}\mathrm{CH}_3\mathrm{ClCHClCHCH}_3
