Question : 8 of 11
Marks: +1, -0
What is meant by isomers? Draw the structures of two isomers of butane, C4H10\mathrm{C}_4\mathrm{H}_{10}. Explain why we cannot have isomers of first three members of alkane series
Solution:
Isomers are compounds which have the same molecular formula but different structures.
HCHHCHHCHHCHHHn- butane\underset{\text{n- butane}}{ \mathrm{H}-\overset{ \vert^{\mathrm{H}} }{ \underset{ \vert_{\mathrm{H}} }{ \mathrm{C} } }-\overset{ \vert^{\mathrm{H}} }{ \underset{ \vert_{\mathrm{H}} }{ \mathrm{C} } }-\overset{ \vert^{\mathrm{H}} }{ \underset{ \vert_{\mathrm{H}} }{ \mathrm{C} } }-\overset{ \vert^{\mathrm{H}} }{ \underset{ \vert_{\mathrm{H}} }{ \mathrm{C} } }-\mathrm{H} }  HCHHCHCHHHCHHHIso butane\underset{\text{Iso butane}}{ \mathrm{H}-\overset{ \vert^{\mathrm{H}} }{ \underset{ \vert_{\mathrm{H}} }{ \mathrm{C} } }-\overset{ \vert^{\mathrm{H}} }{ \underset{ \vert_{\mathrm{H}-\underset{ \vert_{\mathrm{H}} }{ \mathrm{C} }-\mathrm{H}} }{ \mathrm{C} } }-\overset{ \vert^{\mathrm{H}} }{ \underset{ \vert_{\mathrm{H}} }{ \mathrm{C} } }-\mathrm{H} }
Since branching is not possible in first 3 members thus isomers of these first members of alkane series is not possible.
