Given:
x=62\overline{x} = 62
a=47.5a = 47.5
h=5h = 5
The formula for the mean in the step-deviation method is:
x=a+hu\overline{x} = a + h\overline{u}
62=47.5+5u62 = 47.5 + 5 \overline{u}
6247.5=5u62 - 47.5 = 5 \overline{u}
14.5=5u14.5 = 5\overline{u}
u=14.55\overline{u} = \frac{14.5}{5}
u=2.9\overline{u} = 2.9
